Keep your PC updated and with free space

By the endYour PC and phone run the newest software they can, and the PC has enough free space for building.

Your app is for:
Your computer:

Claude's app for Windows needs Windows 10 or newer, and the building tools you install in Part 4 are large. So your PC must be up to date, and it must have room. Do both now, before the Claude steps, because updates take a while.

Check which Windows you have

  1. Press Windows, type about, and press Enter when About your PC appears. (Or: Start, Settings, System, About.)
  2. Under Windows specifications, read the Edition line: Windows 11 Home, Windows 10 Pro, and so on.

This guide recommends Windows 11. Windows 10 still runs Claude's app, but Microsoft stopped giving it free security updates on October 14, 2025. If you are on Windows 10, see "If something goes wrong" below.

Update the PC

  1. Plug a laptop into power.
  2. Click Start, then Settings (the gear), then Windows Update at the bottom of the list on the left. (Windows 10: Settings, Update & Security, Windows Update.)
  3. Click Check for updates. Wait while it looks.
  4. If something is found, click Download & install or Install now. Let it run. When it asks, click Restart now. Allow 20 to 60 minutes and do not turn the PC off.
  5. Come back to the same page and check again. Repeat until it says You're up to date.

If the page offers Upgrade to Windows 11 with a Download and install button, take it. It is a big update, so allow an hour or more.

Check free space

  1. Click Start, Settings, System, then Storage.
  2. Wait for the bar to fill in. It shows how much is used and how much is free. The number is in GB, gigabytes. (You can also open File Explorer and click This PC; each drive shows "x GB free".)

For building you want at least 50 GB free. The building tools, your project, its backups and future Windows updates all need room.

Free up space

If you are short, the Storage page helps:

  1. Click Cleanup recommendations. It lists temporary files, large files you have not opened in a while, and apps you do not use. Tick what you no longer need and click Clean up.
  2. On the Desktop, right-click the Recycle Bin and click Empty Recycle Bin. Space only comes back when it is emptied.
  3. Open File Explorer, click Downloads, and delete old installers and large files you no longer need.
  4. Look at the free number again.

Do not delete anything you do not recognize inside the System & reserved category. Those files belong to Windows.

Update the phone too

On iPhone

On the iPhone, open Settings, tap General, then Software Update. Install what is offered. Plug the phone in and allow 20 to 40 minutes.

On Android

On most Android phones, open Settings, tap System (on Samsung phones: Software update), then System update or Software update, and install what is offered. Plug the phone in and allow 20 to 40 minutes. The names differ a little between phone makers; the search box at the top of Settings finds it if you type update.
