Your web browser
By the endYou can open a web address, use tabs, go back, and tell a web address from a search.
A browser is the app that shows web pages. Claude's website, Apple's and Google's developer pages and this guide all open in one. Your PC comes with Microsoft Edge. Google Chrome works too. Use it if you already know it. The steps below name Edge first, with Chrome in brackets where it differs.
Open Edge
Click the Edge icon on the taskbar: a blue and green swirl. Or press Windows, type edge, and press Enter. (Chrome's icon is a red, yellow and green ring with a blue center.)
The first time, Edge may show a few welcome pages: sign in, import, "confirm your settings". Click Confirm, Skip or Not now on each. Any choice is fine.
The address bar
At the top of the window is a long box, the address bar. It stretches across the top in both Edge and Chrome.
- Click inside the address bar. Anything already there becomes selected.
- Type
claude.aiexactly, with no spaces. - Press Enter. The Claude website opens. Do not sign up yet. Part 2 does that with you.
A web address has dots and no spaces, like claude.ai or developer.apple.com. If you type words with spaces, the browser does a web search instead and shows a list of results. Both are useful. When this guide shows an address in this style, type it exactly and press Enter.
Links
A link is text or a picture that opens another page when clicked. Link text is often blue or underlined. The pointer becomes a pointing hand over a link. Click once.
To go back to the page you came from, click the < arrow at the top-left of the window.
Tabs
A tab is one page inside the browser window. Tabs sit in a row across the top. You can keep this guide in one tab and Claude in another.
- New tab: press Ctrl + T, or click the + at the right end of the tab row.
- Switch: click a tab.
- Close the current tab: Ctrl + W.
Make it readable
If text is too small, press Ctrl + + to zoom in, and Ctrl + - to zoom out. Ctrl + 0 goes back to normal.
Practice
- Open a new tab and go to
support.microsoft.com. - In another new tab, go to
developer.apple.com. - Click a link on either page, then go back with the < arrow.
- Close both tabs with Ctrl + W.
