Your web browser

By the endYou can open a web address, use tabs, go back, and tell a web address from a search.

Your computer:

A browser is the app that shows web pages. Claude's website, Apple's developer pages and this guide all open in one. Your Mac comes with Safari. Google Chrome works too. Use it if you already know it. The steps below name Safari first, with Chrome in brackets where it differs.

Open Safari

Click the compass icon in the Dock: a blue circle with a red and white needle. Or open it from Spotlight by typing safari. (Chrome's icon is a red, yellow and green ring with a blue center.)

The address bar

At the top of the window is a long box, the address bar. In Safari it sits in the middle of the toolbar. In Chrome it stretches across the top.

  1. Click inside the address bar. Anything already there becomes selected.
  2. Type claude.ai exactly, with no spaces.
  3. Press Return. The Claude website opens. Do not sign up yet. Part 2 does that with you.

A web address has dots and no spaces, like claude.ai or developer.apple.com. If you type words with spaces, the browser does a web search instead and shows a list of results. Both are useful. When this guide shows an address in this style, type it exactly and press Return.

A link is text or a picture that opens another page when clicked. Link text is often blue or underlined. The pointer becomes a pointing hand over a link. Click once.

To go back to the page you came from, click the < arrow at the top-left of the window.

Tabs

A tab is one page inside the browser window. Tabs sit in a row across the top. You can keep this guide in one tab and Claude in another.

  • New tab: press Command + T, or click the + at the right end of the tab row.
  • Switch: click a tab.
  • Close the current tab: Command + W.

Make it readable

If text is too small, press Command + + to zoom in, and Command + - to zoom out. Command + 0 goes back to normal.

Practice

  1. Open a new tab and go to support.apple.com.
  2. In another new tab, go to developer.apple.com.
  3. Click a link on either page, then go back with the < arrow.
  4. Close both tabs with Command + W.
