Show Claude a picture

By the endYou can send Claude a screenshot or a photo and ask about it.

Your computer:

A picture beats a long description. When your screen looks different from this guide, or a button is missing, or your paper sketch is ready, show it to Claude. Claude can read a screenshot or a photo. Claude accepts JPEG, PNG, GIF and WebP pictures, and up to 20 files in one chat.

There are three ways to send a picture. Learn all three; you'll use each one.

Way 1: the + button

  1. Have the picture saved on your computer, for example on the Desktop or in Downloads.
  2. In the chat, click the + button at the lower left of the message box, then Add files or photos.
  3. A window opens showing your files. Click the picture once, then click Open at the bottom right.
  4. A small preview of the picture appears above or inside the message box. It is attached, but not sent yet.
  5. Type what you want to know, then press Return (on a Windows PC, Enter).

Way 2: drag and drop

  1. Make the browser window smaller, so you can see the picture's icon on the Desktop, or in a Finder window (Mac) or File Explorer window (Windows PC) next to it.
  2. Press and hold on the picture's icon, drag it over the message box, and let go.
  3. The preview appears. Type your question and press Return.

Way 3: paste a screenshot

This is the fastest for anything on your screen.

On a Mac
  1. Press Command + Control + Shift + 4. The pointer becomes a cross.
  2. Drag a box around the part of the screen you want. Let go. The screenshot is copied, not saved (Part 1 covered the saving version).
  3. Click in the Claude message box and press Command + V. The preview appears.
  4. Type your question and press Return.
On a Windows PC
  1. Press Windows + Shift + S. The screen dims and a small strip of buttons appears at the top.
  2. Drag a box around the part of the screen you want. Let go. The screenshot is copied to the clipboard (and on Windows 11 also saved, as Part 1 explained).
  3. Click in the Claude message box and press Ctrl + V. The preview appears.
  4. Type your question and press Enter.

Try it

Take a screenshot of the Claude screen itself and send it with this:

A photo from your phone

For paper sketches (Part 3) you'll photograph a page with your phone. Two options:

  • In the Claude app on your phone (step 9): tap the + next to the message box, then Camera to take a photo or Photos to pick one. Send it with your question. The chat shows up on your computer too.
  • Move the photo to your computer the way Part 1 showed (AirDrop on a Mac; a cable or an email to yourself on a Windows PC). The photo lands in Downloads or Pictures. Then use Way 1.
